Susan Hammond

Susan Hammond is a Guild certified Feldenkrais® practitioner, in practice since 2003. She maintains a private practice in Sonoma County, California, teaching Awareness Through Movement® group classes and seeing individuals for private Functional Integration® sessions at her office in Sebastopol.  Her current efforts focus clients on pain relief, flexibility and coordination, personal effectiveness, and wellness.

Susan earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Lewis & Clark College. She became a women’s health advocate for Planned Parenthood and served as a medical assistant at Women’s Health Associates. For over eight years, she served on the management staff of Coastal Health Alliance (Point Reyes, California) where her responsibilities included: services coordination, employee hiring, patient education, medical assisting and state and federal agency coordination.

Since the mid 1980’s she has integrated the studies of physical movement, martial arts and dance, bodywork, and self-defense. In 1986, Susan began to practice the Japanese martial art of Aikido. In 2007, she attained third-degree black belt. It was during this period that she commenced an integrative study of the physical aspects of the art, human effectiveness, communication, safety, women’s issues, leadership and wellness. She became certified as an Amma Japanese massage therapist and a Lomi somatic therapist. She also developed and has lead a series of mother/daughter and women’s self-defense programs with an emphasis on safety.

She teaches Aikido at Two Rock Aikido dojo (Petaluma, California) where she continues to train for her own advancement in the art.  She lives in Sonoma County with her husband and home-schools her 13-year-old daughter. She has parented 3 stepchildren who are now adults.
